At the heart of West Monroe’s small business community lies a local favorite that believes sleep is more than a luxury—it’s essential. American Mattress Outlet, owned and operated by Robby Compton, has been helping Northeast Louisiana sleep better since opening its doors in August 2017. Located at 2200 North 7th Street, the store is a one-stop shop for mattresses, adjustable bases, foundations, frames, and top-of-bed sleep accessories. But beyond quality sleep products, Robby and his team offer something even more valuable: a commitment to honest service and a deep love for the community they serve.
With 11 employees and a philosophy rooted in relationships rather than transactions, Robby proudly says, “I tell people all the time that I am not a salesman, I am a business owner. HUGE difference. I genuinely want to take care of you, and my employees understand that.” This people-first mindset has helped American Mattress Outlet build a strong and loyal customer base, driven not by high-pressure tactics, but by trust.
A proud Chamber member for six years, Robby joined the West Monroe West Ouachita Chamber because of his passion for networking and his belief in the mission of the Chamber. “They always have my back,” he says. Though his in-store responsibilities have grown over the years, his appreciation for the Chamber's support has remained steady. And while he may no longer be as involved in Chamber committees as he once was, his roots in the organization run deep.
Community involvement is a core part of Robby’s values. American Mattress Outlet sponsors local school initiatives and sports teams, and supports organizations like Broaden Horizons, First West Thrift Store, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. On a more personal note, Robby also leads a high school boys’ Life Group through his church, First West, further underscoring his commitment to mentorship and making a difference beyond business.
Keeping close to the original model of providing a great product to the community, its consistency and care that have earned Robby and his team several recognitions, including “Best of the Delta” awards and past Chamber honors- including Small Business Innovator of the Year. Robby is most proud of the reputation his business holds: “We offer great American-made mattresses and work with companies that not only stand behind their product—they stand behind me.”
His journey to business ownership wasn’t conventional—he often jokes it was born out of “desperation.” Tired of a career filled with travel, Robby took a leap of faith after more than two decades in another industry. “Mattresses are the widget God gave me,” he says with a smile. “A mattress can genuinely help people.” Inspired by a family legacy of entrepreneurship—both grandfathers, his father, and now his brother all owned businesses—Robby finds joy in creating a company where values come first and fun is part of the job.
When asked what being named Member of the Month means to him, Robby doesn’t hesitate: “A LOT! I don’t need to be recognized for what we do, but it sure feels good sometimes. I love my community, and I think we bring something to it. The fact that someone else sees that means the world.”
His advice for other business owners? “Pray a lot, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and don’t be afraid to be wrong. Also, be prepared to work harder than everyone else. Have fun! If it’s not fun, go do something else.”
